Inlays & Onlays

While we can use tooth-coloured composite resin to restore small to medium-sized cavities in teeth, these would not be strong enough to restore more significant areas of decay. In this case, we can provide beautiful porcelain restorations called inlays or onlays. These restore strength, structure and appearance to the damaged tooth and will blend in seamlessly with your natural tooth colour.

The result is virtually invisible, and porcelain inlays and onlays are extremely durable and long-lasting. Inlays and onlays are cosmetic dental treatments that will also help to protect and preserve teeth.

What is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?

An inlay is designed to restore the middle portion of the chewing surface of a back tooth.

An onlay is slightly larger and can restore a larger cavity and more extensive damage to a tooth, including the tooth cusps.

What Is the Procedure for an Inlay or Onlay?

An inlay or onlay is an indirect restoration, meaning it is made outside the mouth.

First, we prepare your tooth by removing all the decay and damaged portion before taking an accurate impression of the prepared tooth.

The impression is sent to our dental lab, where they create a model used to fabricate your porcelain inlay or onlay in a shade that will match your natural tooth exactly.

A temporary filling protects the tooth while your restoration is being made. The temporary filling isn’t as strong as a permanent restoration, so it is best to avoid eating anything very chewy or sticky or hard on that tooth as this could dislodge or break it.

Once your inlay or onlay is ready, you return to Shire Dental, where we can remove your temporary filling and try in your new inlay or onlay.

After ensuring it fits perfectly, we cement the restoration into your tooth, completing your treatment. Your inlay or onlay is precision made to create a tight seal between the tooth and the restoration that helps prevent further decay.

Caring for Your Inlay or Onlay

You don’t need to do anything special to look after your new restoration other than brushing your teeth and flossing around them as usual.

Your new restoration should last for years to come and will not discolour or stain. We will check its condition during every dental examination to ensure it continues to provide good protection, so your restored tooth will remain strong while looking good.
