What are the Main Differences between Porcelain and Composite Resin Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are indirect restorations, so they are made in our dental laboratory to our exact prescription. They are thin shells of porcelain made to fit precisely over the prepared tooth surface. Usually, it is necessary to remove approximately 0.5mm of tooth material in preparation for porcelain veneers to create enough room for these restorations. Porcelain veneers are hard-wearing and durable and will not stain or discolour. With the right care, they can last ten or more years.
Composite resin veneers are made chairside, so it is frequently possible to complete them during a single visit. It may be unnecessary to remove tooth material in preparation for these veneers. The composite resin is applied to your teeth before it is hardened, shaped and polished. Composite resin is durable, but it is not as hard-wearing as porcelain, and it can become discoloured and stained after a few years, depending on your lifestyle choices. So, for example, if you smoke, it will discolour more quickly.
Composite resin is a more cost-effective option and can be ideal for anyone looking to make subtle changes to the appearance of their teeth. Porcelain veneers can create a more significant transformation and are ideal if you wish to have multiple veneers.
