Daily Oral Hygiene

Fluoride enhances the ability of the tooth’s surface to resist acid attacks, hypersensitivity and decay. Therefore, everyone over the age of three should be brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, drinking fluoridated tap water will directly benefit the teeth of even the youngest person in the family.

Plaque is a clear, sticky film on the surface of your teeth and gums. If not removed through daily brushing and flossing it becomes hard and known as tartar, which cannot be removed by your toothbrush.

This can cause irritation and inflammation leading to red, swollen and tender gums that bleed when you brush and floss. This is often a sign of gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease that can cause bone deterioration and tooth loss.

The importance of an effective oral hygiene routine cannot be overemphasised. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day, in conjunction with regular professional cleaning appointments with our team, will keep your teeth and gums healthy and your breath fresh.

Recent studies have indicated a link between poor oral health and poor general health. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and has been associated with cardio vascular disease, diabetes and stroke.

Shire Dental can provide advice on cleaning and flossing techniques in order to maximise the effectiveness of your at home oral care routine so you can enjoy a healthy mouth and bright smile.
